Where the chassis number is
Japanese cars sold new in Japan carry a chassis number instead of a 17-character VIN: model code, a dash, serial. Any of these three places has it.
Export certificate
Line 車台番号 (chassis number). The exporter's deregistration paper, often called the export certificate.
NZE141-6012345
Plate under the bonnet
A riveted metal plate on the firewall or strut tower. Model code, a dash, then the serial.
ZVW30-1234567
The seller's listing
Most importers quote it; if not, ask. A model code alone (ZVW30) is not enough: the serial finds one car.

Questions people ask
What is a Japanese auction sheet?
The inspection report written at the auction house before the car is sold. One page: overall grade, interior and exterior grades, the odometer reading that day, a body diagram with damage codes and the inspector's notes. Most cars exported from Japan went through an auction, so the sheet is the closest thing to an honest history.
What is free and what costs money?
Free: every auction appearance of the chassis with its date, house, grade and the car as listed. €9.99 opens the full sheet: odometer, damage map in plain words, sale price in yen, equipment and photos. Everything the archive filed under one listing opens with one payment, whether that is one sheet or ten.
How do I know the record is for my car and not a lookalike?
A record is listed as yours only when the archive matched your number digit by digit. The archive hides a couple of digits on some sheets, so cars from the same batch come back as similar entries: they sit in a separate folded list with the inspector's handwritten number, and you compare the handwriting yourself. After a purchase the number is checked again against the full sheet. A mismatch on a record the archive matched means an automatic refund.
The search found nothing. Was the car never auctioned?
Not necessarily. Cars sold between dealers, cars from some smaller houses and cars older than about 2010 are often missing. Check the number against the export certificate and search again with the exact spelling.
Can I read the sheet in my language?
Yes. The inspector's notes and the damage map are translated into plain English, and the opened sheet can be shown in Russian, Ukrainian, Greek, Urdu or Romanian. The original Japanese sheet is always shown next to it.
Is the price the same everywhere?
Yes. €9.99 per sheet including VAT, wherever you are; at checkout it is shown in your currency. Card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Link. No account needed; a receipt with the tax paid comes from Stripe, the link to the sheet from us.
